Who doesn’t want healthy, shiny, and lush looking hair? That is why I am going to share with you some tricks of the trade to help combat against the hair war of split ends. Split ends are a nuisance for most of my clients but there are ways to minimize the appearance of them. Hair appears unhealthy because there is a lack of moisture, protein or both in the hair. This ends up causing the hair to break off and cause split ends. Here are four tips to help keep your hair looking shiny and healthy.
Hair Maintenance
1. Get a haircut before it’s too late!
It’s ok to push your hair to the limit if your split ends aren’t noticeable but when they are super bad it’s time to schedule that haircut. The longer you wait to put it off the worse your split ends will become. They actually start breaking and going up the hair strand which then causing your hair to become unruly and thinner looking. For short hair every 6 weeks is the typical schedule and for medium to long hair every 6 to 8 weeks for a trim. Yes you can get your haircut sooner this is just the typical schedule my clients use.
2. Step away from that blow dryer!
I know you have to blow dry your hair, but if it’s the weekend and you aren’t going anywhere give your hair a break too. You might not think this will make a big difference but even laying off the hot heat once a week can start to bring a noticeable change to your hairs appearance in as little as 4 weeks. I have seen clients actually burn their hair so bad it has caused the hair to break off from the hot heat. So remember to have your blow dryer on the low to medium heat settings and then close your hair shaft down with using the cool settings for a finish. Thermal heat protector products are also good to use on your hair before blow drying it. This will help to protect the hair from the excessive hot heat.
3. Back off the shampoo!
I know it sounds crazy but actually waiting to wash your hair is a good thing. Start washing your hair every other day instead of every day. This can help your natural oils from your scalp travel down to your hair strand. The best oils are the ones your own body produces on the scalp for the hair. I am not saying wait weeks before you wash your hair because it can get too oily but if you are experiencing dry hair then try to wash it every other day. I think you will see a difference in your hairs moisture and shine.
4. Use some conditioner!
Hair conditioner and deep therapy treatments are life savers with dry damaged hair that has split ends. This begins to restore the hairs moisture and protein back to where it should be. Especially if you have chemically treated hair. This is very important to prevent your hair color from fading and to restore shine and elasticity back into the hair. A deep conditioning treatment once a week or twice a month will bring dramatic results in a little as 4 weeks.
